To my wife in the spring of 1996 at South Garden, Fudan.

The silly, not yet knowing life, hair touched with frost,

Drifting alone in his lone boat.

The a-thousand-year-old book hugged,

A lone lamp from night tonight.

Time flows, there afloat,

I’d ask the traces of my vain life,

When will this come to stop.

The east wind’s turning green again

Spring’s on the twig atop.

I refrain from treading on the flowers

Of the grasses year after year,

Who knows me and will stay?

The twig has fragrance in my sleeve;

I’d send it to you far away.

There the spring fair, it should know what I mean;

To knock on my tower at night it brings a wind to blow.

You need not ask, the traveler far away,

Suffers his homeless woe.
